FUNCTIONAL CONSTIPATION
The body speaks in a language of symptoms, and although constipation may feel like enough of a problem on its own, it is commonly the body communicating with us in the form of a physical symptom. My job as a naturopathic doctor is to listen to this language of symptoms and treat the cause underneath it all.
We unconsciously absorb and withhold incredible stress in order to maintain our daily lives. Over time, this emotional withholding overflows to the physical plane. The body looses balance and disease manifests. Unfortunately, television, alcohol, and prescription medications only mask the body’s ability to communicate. Instead, we need to listen to the wisdom of the body so we can treat the real problem.
Constipation makes us feel bloated, causes toxic backup and is linked to acne, hormonal imbalance and cancer. On the emotional level, constipation feeds a tenuous cycle where we can’t feel relaxed and calm because we’re constipated and we’re constipated because we use improper tools to create relaxation and calm.
Digestive health means one formed, yet easy to pass bowel movement every morning upon waking. To create this healthy habit we must absorb a new mental mantra, relax and release.
At home treatment for constipation:
- Stop eating 4 hours before bedtime. Instead, drink hot organic chamomile tea to relax the nervous system and stimulate digestion. Turn off the television and listen to soothing music.
- In the morning, wake up 20 minutes earlier. Make a hot cup of fresh lemon water and sit cross-legged on your living room floor for 15 minutes. Read a magazine or flip through a picture book to help you relax.
- For the final 5 minutes, sit on the toilet, bringing your reading materials with you. Creating this ritual of relaxing the pelvic floor by sitting on the toilet re-trains the colon and autonomic nervous system.
- Finally, buy a water bottle and drink a minimum of 64 ounces of water each day.
If you’re taking laxatives or using coffee or cigarettes to stimulate a bowel movement, stop. These substances are habit forming, mask the problem and will only create bigger issues.
